Voices of the Peaks is a choral suite celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Peak District National Park. It was premiered at Buxton International Festival in 2026 by three of Hannah Brine’s choirs: High Peak Singers, Didsbury Singers and Bollington Singers.
The suite journeys through a variety of musical styles, reflecting our relationship with this remarkable landscape while exploring both its natural beauty and its rich history.
1. Where Two Rivers Meet (4’40) - optional Flute
An uplifting feel, with rolling quavers and lilting melodies depicting the convergence of two rivers that shaped the local mill industry.
2. Sunday Rebellion (4’00) - optional Violin
A driving, energetic 7/8 movement marrying historic folklore of the Nine Ladies Stone Circle with the pivotal Kinder Trespass of 1932.
3. Mother Mountain (6’20)
Our take on a secular prayer, evoking stargazing on Mam Tor, and our awe of the natural world.
4. This Old Stone (4’30-5’10) - optional Alto Saxophone
A soulful take on the idea of our beautiful local stone being smoothed over time, in a metaphor for ourselves being smoothed on our own journeys through life.
5. What Part Of The Earth Am I? (3’30) - optional Flute
A bright, folky 6/8 movement, which encourages us to notice the details of the natural world around us, and poses an important question for us all.
6. These Rolling Hills (3’25) - optional Violin
A love song to the land - a celebration of the feeling of coming home to the Peak District countryside.
